about

Yuxa Records are very proud to present Apophenia the debut Ep by Newman Williams. Williams has been quietly releasing tracks under his name, and other aliases, over the last year. In particular, he has became a staple of Yuxa Records’ audiovisual publication Nowhere to Be Found. With Apophenia Williams gives us the first official collection of his work.

The EP opens with “Without You”, a track which evokes a sense of longing but also ignites a sense of hope. This dualistic approach sets a very emotive tone which is carried on by Williams’ throughout the rest of the tracks. The equally haunting and warm sounds were inspired by a juxtaposition in Williams’ personal life after he experienced the loss of a loved one during a time of otherwise great happiness.

Whereas Without You eases the listener in with sparse rhythms and an ambient atmosphere, the following two tracks “Shades” and “El Ravel” are bold and instantly demand the listeners attention. These two tracks provide the main body to the EP and are perhaps the most complex. Williams’ has poignantly blended Kalimbas and chimes to create airy rhythms and melodies which are disrupted by synths and powerful drums to provide depth and a darker tone to the tracks.

The closing track “With the Lights Out (Part 1)” is undoubtedly the darkest. Using a sultry saxophone riff over a classic, if slightly slowed down, techno rhythm this track confirms the variety of environments in which Apophenia could be played. “With the Lights Out (Part 1)” would most certainly be at home in the shadows of a club. As the name suggests, it is clear that Williams’ intends to develop this sound further. Much like the work of some of his influences; Four Tet, Bonobo and and Shigeto, Williams’ Apophenia is both original and memorable and will have listeners intrigued and encapsulated for a long time to come.
